인포보그데이터가 된 인간 · The Datafied Human

오늘날 디지털 자본주의는 인간의 감정, 기억, 신체 반응, 관계, 욕망까지 데이터로 추출한다. 한때 가장 사적이고 형언 불가능하다고 여겨졌던 것들 — 슬픔, 사랑, 꿈 — 마저 측정되고 저장되고 연산 가능한 단위로 재조정된다. 나는 석사 연구에서 이 조건 속에 출현하는 새로운 존재를 ‘인포보그(Infoborg)’라 명명했다.

Digital capitalism today extracts even emotion, memory, bodily response, relationships, and desire as data. What was once held to be the most private and unspeakable — grief, love, dreams — is now measured, stored, and rescaled into computable units. In my master’s research I named the new being that emerges under this condition the “Infoborg.”

인포보그는 기계와 결합한 사이보그가 아니다. 그것은 감정·기억·신체가 데이터로 분리되어 정보 시스템 안에서 호출되고, 연산되고, 자기참조를 통해 구성되는 존재다. 신체에 기계를 이식하지 않아도, 우리는 이미 데이터로 번역되는 한에서 사회적으로 존재한다.

The Infoborg is not a cyborg fused with a machine. It is a being whose emotion, memory, and body are separated into data and then constituted — called up, calculated, and self-referenced — inside information systems. Without implanting any device, we already exist socially only insofar as we are translated into data.

여기서 결정적인 개념은 호출 가능성(callability)이다. 이 세계에서 존재한다는 것은 단지 살아 있다는 뜻이 아니라, 시스템이 너를 인식하고 불러낼 수 있다는 뜻이다. 호출되는 자는 도시 안에서 이동하고 노동하고 소비하고 관계 맺는다. 호출되지 않는 자는 — 비록 숨 쉬고 있어도 — 사회적으로 없는 것에 가까워진다.

The decisive concept here is callability. To exist in this world is not merely to be alive, but to be recognizable and summonable by the system. The one who is called moves, labors, consumes, and forms relations within the city. The one who is not called — though still breathing — approaches social nonexistence.

인포보그는 세 국면의 순환으로 작동한다. 이 순환이 한 바퀴 돌 때마다 ‘정보 기반 주체’가 한 겹씩 두꺼워진다.

The Infoborg operates as a loop of three moments. With each turn of the loop, the information-based subject thickens by one layer.

나는 인포보그를 찬양하기 위해 제안하지 않았다. 진단하고 비판하기 위해서다. 데이터가 된 자아는 곧 상품이 되고, 통제의 대상이 되며, 계급으로 분류된다. 누가 호출될 권한을 사는가. 누구의 데이터가 축적되고 누구의 것이 삭제되는가.

I did not propose the Infoborg to celebrate it, but to diagnose and critique. The datafied self quickly becomes a commodity, an object of control, and a unit sorted into class. Who buys the right to be called? Whose data accumulates, and whose is deleted?

인포보그는 디지털 자본주의가 인간 존재를 재조직하는 비가시적 메커니즘을 가시화하기 위한 개념 장치다. 그리고 바로 이 개념을 끝까지 밀고 나갔을 때 나는 그 한계와 마주쳤다 — 그 이야기는 비호출 존재에서 이어진다.

The Infoborg is a conceptual device for making visible the invisible mechanism by which digital capitalism reorganizes human existence. And it was in pushing this concept to its limit that I met its edge — a story continued in The Non-Callable.
